Title: GOD’S EXAMPLES FOR US AND HIS HELP FOR US
S: “.for they drank of the spiritual rock that accompanied them, and
that rock was Christ..Now these things occurred as examples to keep us
from setting our hearts on evil things as they did..So, if you think you
are standing firm, be careful that you don’t fall! No temptation has
seized you except what is common to man. And God is faithful; he will
not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are
tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can stand up under
it.” 1 Corinthians 10: 4, 6, 12-13
O: In this passage, Paul is outlining several things. 1) the rock that
the Hebrews drank from was Jesus. Paul is outlining one basic fact that
most Christians miss – that people have ALWAYS been saved by faith, not
by works. 2) He’s saying that the only reason the Old Testament was
even written was to be an example for us – so we don’t have to walk down
that same path. That’s important. And 3) he’s saying that God will
provide a way of escape for us, because what we’re dealing with, God has
dealt with many times, because he’s dealt with people for so long.
A: I think this is VERY important for me to remember. The more I’m in
the Bible, the more I am reminded that others have walked down some of
the same stupid paths that I have. I can learn – not just by doing, but
by reading. As I’ve read stories of David, of Peter and of others, I’ve
realized some of the mistakes they’ve made and that I don’t have to do
that again and again.
Well, I wish it were that easy. If only I could learn from all the
mistakes of others, then I would be able to find the path God wants for
me so much easier. But often, I still have to learn by doing things and
making the same mistakes.
God promises though, that there is no reason I have to learn this way.
He promises a way of escape for me. But in fact, that really ticks me
off – because that means that every time I’ve fallen, I could have
succeeded. Ellen White talks about how each time I give in to
temptation, that I make it harder to win the battle the next time.
P: Lord, I pray you will guide me. I pray you will lead me. I pray you
will be my teacher and you will open my mind to you. I pray you will
help me to learn without falling, but learning from others. And in
that, Lord, I want to depend on the righteousness of Jesus Christ, not
my own. I pray you will come into my heart, Lord, and fill me with the
Holy Spirit. I pray for you to lead me. I love you.
